Tax May Fund Smart Growth Projects In Bay Area

The Association of Bay Area Governments may propose an increase in business property taxes, with all revenue directed to "smart growth" projects.

"The "smart growth" movement sweeping California during the past two years is generating plenty of talk, but Bay Area officials Thursday said the state must now put money behind the rhetoric. "We don't have the financial support to do the kind of rational planning we want to do," said Pleasanton City Councilwoman Becky Dennis. "We need to either keep more of the money we already generate or we need to find another source of revenue." One popular proposal was a modification to Prop. 13 to increase the business property tax.
