San Francisco has just initiated a City CarShare program thatrents cars by the hour to its members.
Members pay $2.50 an hour and 45cents a mile to drive the cars, which are garaged in special stalls atdowntown parking lots. The purpose of the program is to reduce trafficand pollution by encouraging motorists to give up their personal cars.So far, members are very enthusiastic about CarShare, which they sayallows for spontaneity but costs considerably less than owning a car.Similar car co-op programs have been implemented in Seattle, Portland,Chicago, Canada, and Europe.
