Easing FasTrak's Growing Pains

"Caltrans officials admit mistakes were made when FasTrak debuted on Bay Area bridges, but plans are in the works for extra lanes to ease traffic backups. In theory, the electronic toll system is supposed to ease congestion through the toll plazas. The system involves affixing a tiny transponder to the inside of a windshield. Autos with transponders can cruise through the dedicated lane without stopping. Still, gridlock turned away scores of motorists when commuters began crisscrossing traffic to get to FasTrak lanes."
