The American Association for Higher Education (AAHE)-in collaboration with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP), Campus Compact, and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)-invites paper proposals for the edited volume "Service-Learning in Architecture and Planning." This volume will be the first collection of papers written in the field of community outreach-based pedagogy for architectural and planning faculty and schools, and will describe case studies that have incorporated community-based programs and techniques.
The last ten years have seen a major increase in the number of higher education faculty involved in community-based teaching, learning, and research. The AAHE has published a multiple-volume series on service-learning in a variety of academic disciplines that surveys and analyzes this pedagogical approach. This next volume poses a unique opportunity to provide critical analysis and a sharing of experiences.
The sponsoring organizations anticipate three primary themes for papers:
1) Project Case Studies in Community-Based Architectural and Planning Education
2) Mechanisms for Pursuit of Community-Based Education in Schools of Architecture and Planning
3) Pedagogy and Curricula in Schools of Architecture and Planning
Paper proposals are encouraged in, but not limited to, these themes; proposals that cross themes are particularly encouraged. Two copies of the proposals, comprised of a 300-word abstract and one-page CV, should be sent by August 15, 2003 to the following address: Kathy Hillegas, ACSA, Service-Learning Submissions, 1735 New York Avenue, NW, Washington, DC, 20006. Electronic delivery is preferred, e-mails can be sent to [email protected].
