Finland, Norway, and Canada are the top countries in achievingenvironmentalsustainability, according to a study by a consortium of organizations,including Columbia University's Center for International Earth ScienceInformation Network (CIESIN). The United States ranked 11th in the studyof122 nations, just behind Denmark and one place ahead of the Netherlands.Thefindings were based on the Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI),developed jointly by CIESIN and the other two study partners, the YaleUniversity Center for Environmental Law and Policy and the GlobalLeadersfor Tomorrow Environment Task Force of the World Economic Forum. The ESIidentifies 22 major factors such as urban air quality, overall publichealth, and environmental regulation, and measures these factors using67different variables, such as levels of sulfur dioxide in urban air,deathsfrom diseases associated with poor sanitation, and percentage of landprotected from development.
