The Union of Concerned Scientists has issued a report on the Indian Point nuclear reactor (35 miles upwind from Manhattan) that analyzes "the health and economic impacts of a terrorist attack at Indian Point that results in a core meltdown
The report's findings confirm that "Indian Point poses a severe threat to the entire New York metropolitan area." Long-term deaths could be as high as 518,00, with as many as 44,000 immediate deaths. The economic costs could be as much as $2.1 trillion. The report recommends that "the scope of emergency planning measures should be promptly expanded to provide some protection from the fallout from an attack at Indian Point to those New York area residents who currently have none."
