Washington state transportation leaders' planning process for a high-speed rail line between Portland and Vancouver, B.C. has hit its "next-to-final phase," Kelly Moyer writes for The Columbian. Officials may reveal feasible routes in late 2027, which will likely see the train skipping the United States’ Vancouver as it moves between Portland and Seattle.

“The high-speed rail line could someday offer trains capable of traveling 160-250 mph,” The Columbian reports. “That’s significantly faster than Amtrak trains that provide passenger service in the corridor today. Most of the trains traveling Amtrak’s Cascades route between Vancouver, B.C., and Eugene, Ore., top out at 79 mph.”

Jay Inslee, former governor of Washington, introduced the concept of a high-speed rail between Portland and Vancouver, B.C. in 2016. By the end of 2028, transportation leaders in Washington hope to have perfected the initial routes and examined financing options.
