Louisiana’s first autonomous public buses are en route: City leaders and transportation officials announced on Aug. 28 that the Shreveport Area Transit System would bring 15 of its new SporTran Evolve buses to Shreveport, Louisiana.

A $1 million federal Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation grant made the project possible, writes Brian McCallum for The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate. Sportran will begin building a facility to house and charge the fleet in October.

The city will initially see one bus cycling through different routes. The electric 12-seater is equipped with a 360-degree viewing and will initially have a driver behind the wheel, and remote supervision from a control center.
