A proposed city ordinance would restrict people from sleeping in vehicles on public property.
Salt Lake City officials are considering a ban on letting people live or sleep in vehicles on public property, a move that one advocate for unhoused people calls 'barbaric,' reports Tony Semerad in The Salt Lake Tribune. "The changes are part of a larger overhaul of the city’s decades-old camping ordinance and come nearly 16 months into Mayor Erin Mendenhall’s latest public safety plan," Semerad adds.
The proposed rules would cover parks, sidewalks, streets and other public spaces, with some exceptions. For example, enforcement would be suspended during "Code Blue periods," the coldest times of the year.
Council Chair Alejandro Puy expressed concerns about the proposal, noting that "What I think it is going to happen — and I hope I’m wrong — is more citations, more people getting into struggling with the system because of those citations, and maybe some of them even getting arrested." Other council members asked for caution in proceeding with an ordinance that would be "nuanced and selective."
