Recent plans to expand the Javits Convention Center in NYC raises questions over whether stadiums are practical expansions of convention centers.
"...the state and the city are on the verge of announcing a $1.4 billion renovation and addition to the convention center. But that plan is entangled with a proposal to build a $1.4 billion stadium for the Jets .Both are crucial elements of the city's plans for the West Side and its bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games." While many agree that the expansion of the convention center is crucial for the local economy, some have raised doubts over whether a stadium can substitute for expanded convention center space. If the plan goes forward, NYC will be one of only four cities in the U.S. "that operate a convention center in conjunction with a stadium."
