The new funding is the first step in Amtrak vacating its 14th Street rail yard, the future development site of a new baseball stadium.
Major League Baseball might be one of the biggest winners in Amtrak's recent funding winfall. Last week, Chicago was awarded two grants from the Federal Railroad Administration to fund the construction of a new maintenance facility.
When the facility opens, Amtrak will vacate their 14th Street rail yard, making way for a new mixed-use development by Canal Edge, a new spinoff company of business mogul Justin Ishbia. The development is set to include a new baseball stadium that will replace the White Sox's Rate Field, the lease for which expires after the 2030 season.
