The Manchester Ship Canal has gone underused for shipping goods for decades, but is now having a resurgence with the realization that barge freight can greatly reduce carbon emissions.
Another goal of reviving barge shipping in Manchester is the revival of the city's docks. Nick Glass of CNN writes, "Data produced by the UK's Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research in 2006 showed that moving freight by water produced only one quarter of the emissions than equivalent trips by road."
