Job Description

The Planner I reports to the Assistant Community Development Director - Planning & Engineering in the Community Development Department. The Planner I performs professional level planning duties, including zoning administration for all building permit applications. Our team approach calls for an individual who will work effectively with other City staff, professionals, applicants, and citizens. Attending evening meetings will be required.

This position is responsible for professional planning duties including reviewing all building permit applications, administering the City's façade grant program, researching changes to City plans (e.g. comprehensive plan), maps, programs, and ordinances, writing zoning verification letters and assisting with tree preservation easements. The primary responsibilities of this position are anticipated to include zoning and design reviews, zoning variations, historic preservation functions, and providing staff support to the Historic Preservation Commission. The position will also assist the Plan Commission and Zoning Board as needed. The primary responsibilities are subject to change based on staffing needs within the department.

Requirements

General knowledge of the principles and practices of municipal planning, zoning, and subdivision regulation is required, as well as strong oral and written communication skills. Applicants must possess the ability to exercise independent professional judgment in planning their work, analyzing problems, making decisions, and recommending solutions. Essential skills include the ability to read and critique site plans, landscape plans, and architectural elevations, and the ability to read and understand civil engineering plans. Also required are computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet applications and the ability to use GIS to find and display information.

The City is seeking applicants with 3 years of relevant planning experience at a municipality or similar organization. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture or closely related field is required, with a master’s degree preferred. AICP certification is a plus. Experience or background in historic preservation, architecture, design, or construction is a plus.
