About Our Job

The City & Borough of Juneau’s Community Development Department has an opening for a Planner I / II specializing in current planning. This is an entry or journey level community planning position specializing in technical land use permitting and guiding applicants through the CBJ regulatory process for land use. This position is fast-paced, working on multiple concurrent projects at various phases and includes frequent presentations to the Planning Commission and other CBJ boards and committees. This position requires frequent interaction with the public, as Planner-On-Call and in other public settings.

Skills Needed

Our ideal candidate enjoys working in a team environment and communicating with customers and representatives of other agencies. They must be detail oriented, able to work independently and toggle between tasks quickly and efficiently. The work involves mathematical skills to determine whether developments meet dimensional requirements and verbal written communication skills to prepare written reports and communicate with customers. Candidates must be able to communicate complex information clearly. Data analysis is detailed and demands a high accuracy level. Customer service skills are critical and a high level of service is expected with our external and internal customers. Employees may sometimes work under the stress of tight deadlines. This position works in a shared office environment and is required to work thoroughly and independently with moderate noise and occasional interruption.

This position is flexibly staffed, which means that after successfully completing the training program, and gaining the required experience and certifications, you will receive an automatic promotion through the Planner II level. Employees must advance through the series. At that level, you will have acquired the needed experience to meet the minimum qualifications for other positions in the department, should they come available.
