L.A. Transit: Up a Hill and Out to the Sea

16 March 2010 - 2:00pm

The historic Angel's Flight funicular reopened yesterday, as Mayor Villaraigosa announces his vision to transform Los Angeles' transit system in 10 years.

Previous plans projected the new transit lines, in particular the "Railway to the Sea" westside subway, being completed in 2036.

Japhy Grant writes, "Dubbed the 30/10 plan ('Let's do it in 10 years instead of 30' basically), Villaraigosa's big idea is that the federal government should give the $40 billion expected to be raised by Measure R to the city now, so they can go ahead and build the entire proposed system now, giving Angelenos jobs and a genuine shot at combating escalating congestion."

How might instant, near-home car rental allow households to give up a third or second car? Would the substantial savings a household receives from owning and maintaining fewer cars more than compensate for the extra time and discomfort spent riding transit?
