The Greening Of Wal-Mart

A recent environmental strategy meeting at Wal-Mart headquarters was attended by a host of eco-celebrities, including Al Gore, and serves as another signal that the company is serious about improving its green credentials.

"Last October, [Wal-Mart CEO Lee] Scott pledged to transform his sprawling company, which employs 1.8 million people worldwide and ranks No. 2 on the Fortune 500 list, into a lean green machine powered exclusively by renewable energy, producing zero waste, and selling sustainable products."

At a recent meeting at the company headquarters in Bentonville, prominent advocates spoke to some 800 Wal-Mart execs, managers, suppliers, and partners, urging them to push forward with plans to for more sustainable business practices -- including the construction of more stores in downtown, mixed-use neighborhoods, and the addition of green roofs and other eco-friendly features to all its facilities.
