Chicago Looks To Update Its Antiquated Zoning Code

A blue ribbon commission appointed by Mayor Richard Daley released its recommendations to overhaul the city's 45 year old zoning ordinances.

Among the recommendations are provisions to ban the development of bulky condominium buildings that fail to blend with nearby residences. "The commission also proposed that the development of suburbanlike strip shopping centers be barred from selected commercial thoroughfares and zoning "bonuses" be granted to encourage denser development around Chicago Transit Authority and Metra train stations throughout the city."
