Suburban Orange County planners are trying to retrofit suburbs with what the suburbs are missing -- an urban core.

Officials from South County (California) bedroom communities are looking tocatch up with cities such as Orange, Brea and Huntington Beach, in an effort to revitalize downtown areas. These communities are aiming to spruce up or create from scratch pedestrian-friendly village centers. Planners welcome the movement in South County, saying that it is long overdue. Officials are using Old Towne Orange as the model to re-create. The article lists some downtown revitalization projects in the works, such as ones in Lake Forest and San Clemente.
