The Central Artery Corridor Master Plan hopes to deliver "places for people" --an underlying promise of Boston's $14 billion "Big Dig" infrastructure project.
"With a new tunnel to Logan Airport, a gleaming white cable-stayed bridge over the Charles River, and an underground replacement for the Interstate 93 elevated highway through downtown Boston, the $14 billion Central Artery/Tunnel Project is nearing completion. As it does, the spotlight turns from engineering feats and cost overruns to designs intended to restore the city fabric. The recently completed Central Artery Corridor Master Plan calls for new downtown parks, cultural facilities, historic interpretive sites, new city streets, and an array of residential, commercial, and civic development opportunities. These multilayered plans fall into three categories: the Master Plan Keys, a framework for surface design within a 1.3-mile corridor; the Jewels, eight acres of new open space in three downtown districts; and the Wake, opportunities for public and private actions."
