Smart Growth Tour in Charlotte, NC Region: Big Cities, Suburbs and Small Towns, Old and New

Join walkability experts Dan Burden, Paul Zykofsky and Dan Gallagher for an action-packed 3-day tour that will take you from downtown Charlotte and its historic classic neighborhoods to surrounding suburbs, converted mill towns and villages, to the mountain City of Asheville. Each stop will be an opportunity to learn how a wide range of Smart Growth strategies are being implemented in communities of all sizes and shapes in this vibrant region.

The tour starts at 8:00 am on Monday, January 31 at the Westin Charlotte Hotel (venue for the New Partners for Smart Growth conference) in downtown Charlotte and ends at the same location on the evening of Wednesday, February 2. The tour will use many modes of transportation including public transit, walking and coach bus.

Included in the tour cost:
All planning, coordination, administration, guide services, lodging, meals, tour bus, light rail and other direct costs. (Air fare not included)

Tour Leaders:
Dan Burden is considered North America's walkability guru with over 30 years of experience in designing for pedestrians and bicyclists. Dan is founder of the Walkable and Livable Communities Institute. Since 1995, he has visited and worked in over 200 communities every year and has traveled extensively throughout the Carolinas and the Charlotte region.

Paul Zykofsky, AICP, is Associate Director at the Local Government Commission. Over the past 16 years he has worked with local jurisdictions to create walkable, livable communities that incorporate the best principles of Smart Growth and placemaking.

Dan Gallagher, Charlotte DOT's Transportation Planning Manager, is deeply involved with applying innovative transportation tools to retrofit neighborhoods and create walkable, bicycle- and transit-friendly new neighborhoods.
