How would you rate your relationships with your mayor, city council members, other local elected officials, and the chairman and members of your board of directors?

The International Economic Development Council's 2011 Leadership Summit, January 23-25, in San Diego, CA, provides a unique opportunity to foster greater understanding and strengthen your relationships. Attend with your stakeholders, and build the strong relationships required for effective leadership in your community.

According to a newly released publication by the National League of Cities, "local elected officials will be more effective in leading economic development activities to the extent that they forge strong relationships with staff members who work on these issues on a daily basis." The Role of Local Elected Officials in Economic Development outlines the "top 10 list" of things elected officials should know about economic development in order to be effective leaders. This free publication is the result of a partnership between the National League of Cities Center for Research and Innovation and the International Economic Development Council.

• You want your stakeholders to understand the complexities of economic development.
• You want your stakeholders to be able to clearly communicate your community's economic development goals.
• You want your stakeholder to make informed policy decisions that align with your economic development strategies and priorities.

Now, in today's challenging conditions, is the time to show that your economic development organization and your local leadership are working cohesively.

We have programming throughout Leadership Summit that will help you educate your stakeholders on the importance of economic development. Cultivate a greater understanding among your community leadership about emerging issues and successful strategies. Attend the conference as a team, and return home to your community better prepared to work together through the tough economic issues of 2011.

Those Who Try It, Say "It Works!"
"They're how we get some of our funding, how we keep our jobs and, most importantly, how we get deals in the ground! I brought 4 elected officials with me to Columbus and would do the same for San Diego." ~Brett Doney, President & CEO, Great Falls Development Authority, Inc.

"I have always believed that encouraging my board members to attend IEDC conferences and meetings adds greatly to their understanding of the value of meeting with your peers and keeping up with the ever changing world of economic development. The continued education of my board creates an atmosphere of understanding and encouragement for the work we do as professionals." ~Jim Griffin, Executive Director, City of Hornell Industrial Development Agency

"I always bring my Board Chair with me to the Leadership Summit. It allows us to share a common perspective when we return home and bring the conference ideas to life in our city – the whole Board is always more receptive to innovation when one of ‘their own' is promoting it and not just the staff." ~Steven L. Kinney, President, Economic Development Corporation of Oxnard

Sessions of Interest to Educate Your Stakeholders Include:

Economic Development Ethics Workshop
Sunday, January 23
9:30 am – 12:15 pm

Do you know how to tackle difficult situations that pose ethical dilemmas in your professional life? Did you know that IEDC adopted a Code of Ethical Conduct in 2008? Economic developers encounter numerous situations on a regular basis that require sound judgment and strength of character. IEDC developed a Code of Ethics in 2008 to pave the way for the economic development profession in terms of upholding high standards of behavior. This session will provide a basic instruction on ethics, explain the difference between ethics and legal definitions, and use case study examples to foster understanding among participants on ethical decision making. Keep a look out for additional training opportunities offered by IEDC and its accredited partners in 2011.

Riding the Waves of the Economic Storm
Sunday, January 23
3:45 pm – 5:15 pm

The Great Recession impacted many communities that were unprepared for significant jobs losses, companies downsizing or closing, and a decrease in consumer spending. While the federal government passed a national stimulus bill, many communities created their own programs to respond to the recession. This session will highlight best practices of programs created to support economic recovery for communities of all sizes.

Planning for Tomorrow's Leaders
Monday, January 24
10:45 am – 12:15 pm

As communities and businesses create strategic plans and visions for the future, it is also imperative that they develop a succession plan for local leadership. Successful succession plans enable tomorrow's leaders to continue with the implementation of the visions, goals, and programs within the community, as they move forward. This session will show how to establish a succession plan for your community and local businesses.

Planning Resilient Economies in the Mist of the Unknown

This session will analyze how communities can plan for economic shifts and remain resilient in the face of uncertainty.
