HOW YOU BUILD IT:
In today's economy, communities need to leverage their assets to be competitive and grow their local economy. Often overlooked or abandoned, the key partnerships you need to ignite the local economy may already exist in your community. At the 2010 How You Build It conference, we will examine the creative partnerships and visions used in other communities that have helped to jump start new developments and growth.
In difficult economic times, developments can be the drivers that help communities stay afloat. In addition to the jobs provided by the development of new projects, they also contribute to the community's attractive built environment, global competitiveness and the attraction and retention of talented workers. However, for a project to hit the ground running, it needs help and support from every direction. The traditional partners from the public and private sectors may not be enough in today's economy. Communities need to start thinking outside of the box and consider new channels of funding and support. By incorporating a diversified variety of interested parties, a project will have a stronger foundation to build upon.
J. Larry Nichols, Co-Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Devon Energy Corporation, and Jerrold P. Lea, Senior Vice President of Hines, are partnering to develop the Devon Tower, which is one of the country's largest skyscrapers being constructed. The building is going to be LEED certified, so it is sure to be a work of green innovation. Additionally, Devon Tower, the vision of CEO Nichols, will be a key driver towards the renaissance of downtown Oklahoma City. Nichols will start off the plenary session by providing a local business leader's perspective on the role of companies in redevelopment, the partnerships between public and private companies, and how the CEO can be of influence. Lea will then address sustainable development and what works and does not work when tackling a project.
TOPICS & SESSIONS OF INTEREST INCLUDE:
Support: Building Public Support for the Project
When undertaking a major public project, "green" considerations are now essential, not just trendy. Incorporating sustainable design makes projects less expensive to maintain in the long term and more attractive to their users, in addition to lending marketing cachet. This session will showcase examples of innovative, green projects that bring economic and environmental benefits to their communities, covering how they were conceptualized, funded and built.
Design: From Mind to Model: Working with a Design Team
With many ideas in the pot, transforming a project from mind to model can be a daunting task. Ensuring that your community gets the project it wants--and that it meets the needs of all interested parties--is critical. Learn how to speak a common language with a design team and develop strategies that will lead to a product that is just what everyone expected, if not better.
Partnerships: Who are the New Partners?
Teamwork is vital for a major project to be successful. Many public and private partners, such as universities, local corporations, medical facilities, local governments, foundations and philanthropic organizations, faith-based organizations and others can be critical to bringing a project to fruition. Who are some of the less-obvious partners that can be brought in to help make a project happen, and how do you get them on board? This session will help you strategize to find every possible ally.
