The City of Red Lodge is seeking an experienced professional to provide leadership for its newly formed Community Development Department, formerly the departments of Planning and Building. This is an exciting opportunity to relocate to a mountain community with high amenities-recently the subject of a New York Times feature. Located in the Beartooth Mountains of south central Montana, Red Lodge is ideally located 60 miles from the regional economic center of Billings and 70 miles from Yellowstone National Park. The city is planning for smart growth while experiencing a high volume of development applications and striving to maintain its small town character.

The Community Development Director will manage development activities--planning, administering and enforcing land use and building regulations for the City. The Director will supervise the work of staff engaged in activities that include public hearing processes, code revision and updating, variance applications, annexation, site plan review, building review and public facilities development. The Director will represent the department and its policies before the Mayor, City Council, Regional and State agencies. The fast-paced work environment involves frequent contact with public officials, developers, contractors and community members.

A minimum of five years of experience in Municipal Planning, Building, Engineering and/ or Financial Planning is required. Experience with a combined Planning and Building department desirable. The ideal candidate will welcome autonomy, responsibility, and self-direction, and will be a forward thinking consensus builder able to articulate a vision for the collective good of the community.
