Smart Growth For Local Governments Conference - Feb 26-27 In D.C.

ICMA

ICMA, with support from the Smart Growth Network and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), will present its second Leading Practices Conference on smart growth this February 26-27, 2007, in Washington, DC.

The conference titled, "Smart Growth for Local Governments: Creating and Sustaining Livable Communities" will feature three case studies of local governments that are implementing leading practices in smart growth, as well as a special session where select participants will share best practices.

Plenary speakers include Geoff Anderson, director of US EPA's Development, Community, and Environment Division, and Rick Cole, city manager of Ventura, California and one of Governing magazines 2006 Public Officials of the Year.

Case studies will include the City of Winchester, Virginia, which is building a "Green Circle" to connect residents with recreational opportunities and other destinations; Arlington County, Virginia, whose transit-oriented and mixed use neighborhoods have received national acclaim; and, Sarasota County, Florida, a fast-growing community with an innovative approach to measuring the impact of its development on the land and natural systems of South Florida.

Participants will also have an opportunity to share their own leading practices, and get feedback and advice from their peers and from national experts in smart growth.

The conference will close with a tour of Arlington County, Virginia's Rosslyn-Ballston corridor, exemplifying the various scales at which transit-oriented development can be implemented.

The conference will run February 26, 1:00 p.m. to February 27, 2007, 5:00 p.m. Registration is $195 for individuals, $150 for teams of three or more from the same jurisdiction, or $95 for students. Registration will close February 21, 2007.
