Digitial Charretting for Smart Growth

Digitial Charretting for Smart Growth

Criterion Planners

To more effectively develop smart growth plans, urban designers and planners can learn how to use GIS and digital charretting at a special hands-on workshop at the APA National Conference in San Francisco March 21-22, 2005. Workshop participants will form "design teams" seeking the best solution to a development versus preservation problem using INDEX planning support tools in real time.

Teams will set goals for a neighborhood plan, design and evaluate alternative scenarios, and determine which scenario is the smartest growth solution. The charrette will be conducted in two parts on March 21 and 22; prerequisites include familiarity with urban design and GIS.

Workshop registration is available at www.planning.org/2005conference for the session entitled "Using a GIS Charrette to Find Smart Growth Answers." The cost is $50 in addition to the basic APA conference fee. The workshop is co-sponsored by ESRI and Criterion Planners, developers of INDEX planning support software.
