Announcing a New Publication from the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy

The European Union (EU) is transforming its 15 member countries into an increasingly integrated economy and society. With expansion into Central European countries now in its early stages, growing numbers of people now think of themselves not only as Germans or Italians or Scots, but also as Europeans-citizens of this larger place. This regional collaboration has also brought about new approaches in spatial planning for all of Europe.
In this book, Andreas Faludi and his colleagues describe the parallel process that is occurring in the planning world, where planners are creating new forms of spatial planning, and a new intellectual and professional framework for regional planning practice across the continent. The European Spatial Development Perspective (ESDP) was adopted in 1999 after more than 10 years of intensive, transnational networking across linguistic and cultural divides. Faludi, who has worked for more than a decade both chronicling and helping to shape this emerging practice, organized a symposium at the Lincoln Institute in June 2001 of key researchers and others involved in this process. The chapters in this book were adapted from the presentations at the symposium and provide a valuable documentation of the process, including numerous full-color maps and graphics.
Whether European spatial planning will succeed is open to future decision making. The point of the ESDP is to address the issues in a planning discourse encompassing the whole territory of the EU. This book documents this discourse, casts light on its various aspects, and offers examples for North Americans and others interested in the challenges of spatial planning.
