"In the new digital era "state" economies frequently mean much less than regional ones. Orlando, Dallas, Atlanta, Austin and Houston have achieved higher than average rates of technology-related growth while other Southern metropolises, such as Nashville, San Antonio and Jacksonville have lagged behind. Rural and small town areas in the region which, unlike the cities have been largely left behind in the new economy, are particularly handicapped."
