The big winners of Money Magazine's Best Places To Live 2000 competition are Portland (OR), Providence (RI), Chicago (IL), Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill (NC), Salt Lake City (UT) and Sarasota (FL). The article compares cities and the cost of living. One of the criteria includes: "areas that have avoided urban sprawl and overcrowding, where city fathers have put a premium on green space, culture and having an accessible city center."
