This is the first known attempt at a comprehensive list of the world's largest urban areas, including population, land area and population density. This new edition includes all (673) known urban areas with 500,000 or more residents. These urban areas account for an estimated 42 percent of the world's urban population. The document contains a summary of population and density by income and region and charts illustrating the association between lower urban population densities and higher income per capita. A total of 1,117 urban areas are listed.
