In the Northeast, where land costs are high and expectations are high, the most cost-effective way to build is to build up.
According to a recently released 2004 US Census Bureau report, in the Northeast 79 percent of single-family houses built are two or more stories, and just 21 percent are one level. That is a dramatic change from 30 years ago, when housing starts for one-story and two-story houses were at 45 percent each.
