A nationwide coalition of environmental groups is urging the EPA to reject regulations that would increase emissions from refineries making new low-sulfur fuels.
Communities for a Better Environment and other organizations are urging the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reject new nationwide oil refinery regulations they say would increase air pollution in poor communities. The coalition states that the proposed EPA rule involves a tradeoff that strives to improve overall air quality by requiring oil companies to manufacture cleaner-burning gasoline, and in return, the EPA would allow more emissions to be released at refineries, which are usually situated in lower-income areas. The EPA stated that the proposed rule is still under review.
