Evidence is sparse but supports a relationship between physical activityand the built environment.

The Transportation Research Board has released a 224-page "Special Report 282: Doesthe Built Environment Influence Physical Activity? Examining the Evidence." The report includes findings, conclusions, andrecommendations that may be of interest to urban planners andtransportation professionals. Because evidence on the subject is sparsebut supportive of a hypothesized relationship between physical activityand the built environment, the recommendations focus in detail onadditional research and improved data collection for examining therelationship. However, the report also recommends that "thoseresponsible for modifications or additions to the built environmentshould facilitate access to, enhance the attractiveness of, and ensurethe safety and security of places where people can be physically active"(p. 7-9).
