Outrage As Design Classics Removed From London Streets

Routemasters - the loveable London red buses introduced in 1954 - are at the end of the road, says Transport for London, despite massive press and passenger protests.

London's double-decker buses are as much a part of the image of the British capital as Big Ben and the Tower of London. The neat red buses are beloved of Londoners who like the airy open interior, comfortable seats, cheery supervising conductors - and the open platform at the rear that means you can jump on and off when stuck in traffic. All this is to change if Transport for London gets its way and replaces them with single-level "bendy buses", 60 feet long and devoid of charm (and opening windows). Passengers are outraged and protest is growing across the capital.
