A year after Los Angeles arrested and charged Jonathan Hale with vandalism for painting crosswalks, a new proposal may provide a pathway for volunteers to paint them legally.  Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky has put out a motion instructing the Los Angeles Department of Public Transportation to study the feasibility of a pilot program that would allow volunteers to paint crosswalks.

Hale said the charge, which has since been dropped, has not discouraged him from advocating for safer streets. ABC7 reports:

"You know, I'm privileged, I have an army of supporters. I'm not too worried about this, but I will say that we plan to hold off on painting crosswalks and see what the city comes back with. We want to do this legally and hopefully the next time we paint crosswalks, it'll be through an official program," Jonathan Hale said.

Los Angeles did not respond to ABC7’s request for comment.
