Despite having some of the country’s biggest recent population growth, Texas is also the leading supplier of new residents to nine other states, according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau. At the end of 2024, Texas had 31 million residents, having gained 2.1 million people since 2020.

According to an Associated Press article, other states with large numbers of out-migration included California, Florida, and New York, the nation’s other most populous states. California supplied the most new movers to other western states including Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, and Washington.

Prior to 2024, international immigration was the largest source of new residents for most states except Idaho, Kansas, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
