The Brownsville and Matamoros international bridge is the city’s oldest border crossing.
Cameron County, Texas has finalized a deal to purchase the U.S. side of an international bridge between Brownsville and Matamoros, Mexico for $33 million, reports Dina Arévalo in My San Antonio.
According to Arévalo, “Last month, county officials announced what they called “transformative” plans to buy Union Pacific’s 50% ownership stake in the oldest international crossing in Brownsville. The purchase will mark the end of a 115-year partnership between the railroad and the Mexican government.”
The purchase will be funded by revenue bonds that will be repaid via future toll revenue from the bridge. “Once the purchase is finalized, the B&M Bridge will become the fourth international crossing under Cameron County’s control.”
