Gov. Romney has announced plans "to encourage cities and towns to allow dense development near commuter rail and subway stations, as an alternative to suburban development accessible only by car....The goal is to fight sprawl, boost nonfare revenue for the T, and produce more housing all at the same time...." Although NIMBYs will be a force to be reckoned with, around 10,000 housing units "could be built around the stations targeted for redevelopment, along with retail commercial and light industrial development."
