Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. suspends purchases of land for preservation citing a need to revamp the state's land conservation program.
"Striking directly at his predecessor's pet program, Ehrlich argued that the state's environmental policy should focus more on preserving the Chesapeake Bay rather than acquiring scattered parcels across the state...In the waning days of his administration, Glendening (D) sealed land deals to preserve more than 27,000 acres of Maryland forest and farmland, bringing to more than 310,000 acres the amount of land preserved during his eight years as governor."
