"The Deep South reached out to the international design community this year to help its residents and tourists get physically closer to the water that so defines the region-the Mississippi River. A winning design will be chosen Oct. 29, after the recently named five finalists resubmit more detailed proposals.Downtown Memphis, which sits on the riverbank, has been refurbished and built out in the last dozen years. Projects include a mixed-use development called Peabody Place, whose retail and entertainment phase opened in 2000. The Triple-A ballpark, called AutoZone Park, had its inaugural season in 2000. And AutoZone's glass-encased corporate headquarters opened in 1995."
