Once renowned for two centuries of architectural masterpieces, the German city of Dresden was destroyed in World War II by the Allies attempting to cow the Nazis into peace. Later, as a part of East Germany, the Communist "brutalist" style predominated, characterized by concrete, utilitarian buildings. Now, Dresden architects are meeting the challenge of restoring the city to its former glory by artfully balancing the old and the new.
