The San Mateo County Transit District seeks a Principal Planner of Sustainability to be responsible for managing sustainability programs for the San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans) and the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board (Caltrain).
The Principal Planner will manage a sustainability program which incorporates the goals, policies, procedures, and projects that focus on reducing energy and water consumption, waste, and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as assist in the development of policies, procedures, and projects that advance sustainability for facilities and assets, develop and maintain working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to identify leveraging and partnership opportunities, develop consensus on project, schedule, budget, and related activities for sustainability plans, programs, and projects, provide technical assistance to business units and/or functional areas in identifying and implementing sustainability programs, present agency sustainability planning initiatives at meetings both internally and externally including presenting goals and objectives of planning projects, and lead sustainability studies, analyzing data findings, and determining key sustainability performance indicators and evaluating progress. The Principal Planner will also advise senior management on emerging relevant sustainability concerns, relating to organizational initiatives and operational improvements with an emphasis on alternative fuels and bus fleets.
S/he will be responsible for providing sustainability planning support to the Bus Maintenance department on the Electrification of the SamTrans fleet; assisting the Facilities department by providing data/input on environmental conditions (climate changes) at the bus bases; working with the CalMod department on providing energy strategies (analysis on alternative energy sources); developing project scopes, schedules, and budgets; managing selection of consultant contract services and monitoring performance and work activities for compliance with established standards; providing Quality Assurance/Quality Control approval; participating in American Public Transportation Association sustainability activities and seeking opportunities for local
Recognition and identifying sustainability related funding sources, plus coordinating with the grants department as they develop sustainability. S/he will also prepare reports and other communication to senior staff, board members, and outside agencies and committees, developing presentations to public agencies, officials, and the public, plus participate in regional forums addressing climate change and adaptation to help protect SamTrans and Caltrain assets.
The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, transportation planning, transportation engineering, economics, public policy or related field with four years of full time progressively responsible experience in either urban or transportation planning, and one year of sustainability program management. GIS mapping experience is desirable. Experience with project management is desirable. Must have effective oral and written communication and presentation skills. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
