Housed within the Multimodal Division, the Bicycle Planner and Employee Transportation Coordinator will implement a number of innovative bicycle, pedestrian and Transportation Demand Management (TDM) programs. Programs will be both with Boulder County staff (internal programs; ~25% of workplan) and with Boulder County residents and visitors (external programs; ~75% of workplan). This position reports to the Senior Transportation Planner and will work regularly with other planning and engineering staff. This is a highly visible position that requires significant contact with the public, neighborhood groups and public sector staff across multiple municipalities in Boulder County. 

This is a full-time, benefited position with Boulder County. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. The Bicycle Planner will work out of Boulder, CO. Under FLSA guidelines, this position is exempt from overtime. 

Hiring salary: $4,728 per month
Full salary range: $4,728 to $6,809 per month


  1. Provide project support for bicycle, pedestrian and other multimodal related projects in Boulder County, including working with the Engineering Division to review Boulder County capital project designs
  2. Assist the traffic engineer on inventory, design and installation of appropriate regulatory and advisory bicycle and pedestrian signage and roadway markings
  3. Serve as the primary point of contact for public inquiries about bicycle transportation in Boulder County
  4. Provide support for the 2018-2019 update to Boulder County's Transportation Master Plan and other planning efforts
  5. Inventory and evaluate bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, and collaborate with partners on the planning and design of new infrastructure
  6. In coordination with the Regional Trails Planner, identify maintenance needs on county managed bicycle and pedestrian facilities
  7. Oversee the annual vehicle and bike count program including management of a seasonal traffic intern
  8. Develop educational materials and conduct outreach activities to facilitate positive bicycle public relations with groups throughout the county including Boulder County residents, municipal staff, state agencies, and advocacy and other non-profit organizations
  9. Manage and promote use of Boulder County's Bike-n-Ride shelter program, including collaborating with internal and external partners on the construction of new shelters
  10. Manage the annual Bike Map update including map design, fabrication and distribution
  11. Manage the Boulder County employee transportation benefit programs including the RTD EcoPass, vanpool/transit voucher programs, BCycle memberships and car-share programs
  12. Promote, market and measure non-single occupancy vehicle (SOV) commuting by Boulder County employees, including through special events (Bike to Work Day), email outreach, incentive programs and surveys
  13. Serve as the primary point of contact for county employee questions about transportation
  14. Perform other duties, as assigned
  15. May be reassigned during emergency situations

  • A bachelor's degree in planning or a related field

  • At least two years of professional experience in urban, rural, regional, transportation, or community planning, or related field

Additional related education may count towards required experience.

  • Applicants must have a valid driver's license and a good driving record

  6. Prior experience in active transportation planning
  7. Previous experience in bicycle facility design and implementation
  8. Working knowledge of Adobe Create Suite and ArcGIS
  9. Ability to interpret engineering plans
  10. Positive attitude
