The Best Odes to the Subway

Does riding the subway make you want to burst out into song? For the performers of the 10 ballads deemed by Eric Jaffe to be the best songs about the subway, there may be no greater muse.

Inspired by a contest sponsored by the Brooklyn Brewery to see who can write the best song about or inspired by the "sometimes sluggish" and oftentimes loathed G train, Jaffe has compiled "the ten best songs with lyrics about or inspired by subways-at-large."

Selections include Duke Ellington's "Take the 'A' Train", Tom Waits's "Downtown Train", and the Sesame Street cast's ensemble version of "The Subway!"
