Recession Pulls Transit Ridership Down

21 December 2009 - 1:00pm

Transit ridership has dipped in 2009, according to a new report from the American Public Transportation Association. The recession and high unemployment rates are being blamed.

"Last year, public transit ridership hit a 52-year high of 10.7 billion rides. This year, January-through-September ridership was down 4% from the first nine months of last year to 7.7 billion trips, according to new figures from the American Public Transportation Association.

The number of rides fell in 146 of 197 bus systems and in 50 of 64 rail systems from January through September, compared with the same period in 2008."

economic recovery...

Economic recovery is not clearly defined and it’s unto debate until now. The phrase “economic recovery” is mostly associated with economic growth and expansion. I can say that recession has no exemption. After all, it is clearly seen on the present condition of our economy. Although it is a nice little catch phrase, it has been kicked around for some time.
