Beijing To Introduce Free Park'n'Ride Lots
21 December 2006 - 9:00am
To encourage more motorists to take advantage of public transit, the city is planning to build free parking lots near new transit stations.
"Free parking lots will be built near subway and bus stops in Beijing to encourage drivers to use public transport in downtown Beijing, an official said Monday.
Twenty-six free or low-cost large-scale parking lots are included in the plan to reduce traffic jams in downtown Beijing, said Zhou Nansen, a member of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Urban Planning.
The first two, located near some subway stations in Beijing, will each cover about 20 acres, Zhou said."

But what can planners do to support the kind of connections between people I just described? One idea is promoting mixed-use places where there are simply more opportunities for people to run into each other and connect.
