Congestion Pricing Returning To Stockholm

Stockholm's former mayor is leading negotiations for reintroducing Stockholm's congestion pricing system, after a trial in the first half of 2006 led to positive approval by the City of Stockholm's voters. Despite opposition from Stockholm's outlying communities, the conservative Moderate Party, newly leading the national and city governments, is pushing forward with the plan hatched by the liberal Social Democratic and Green Parties.

In the permanent system, toll revenues are likely to go to highway improvements in the Stockholm metropolitan area, where in the trial, these funds supported public transportation. Details of the reintroduced system will be proposed as part of a larger plan for transportation throughout the Stockholm metropolitan area.
