Tofino, a resort community on the west coast of Vancouver Island, is experiencing a severe water shortage due to its rapid development.
"The municipality has issued a public notice asking all hotels, restaurants and other food service businesses to shut down by Friday to preserve what water supply remains."
"The district's main reservoir on nearby Meares Island is very low because of the dry summer."
"The residential water supply is being maintained with water from a creek on the island. As a result, people are being asked to boil their water."
"Devora Reeves, a kayak guide and surfing instructor in Tofino, said the water shortage may be a wake-up call. She said the growth in tourism has been "fantastic," but all the development has put a severe strain on the water resources."
