The Master of Science (MS) and the Dual Degree MS-MBA in Sustainability Management at Stevens prepare sustainability advocates from technical and non-technical backgrounds alike to meet this need head-on. Learn to:

  • Lead large-scale initiatives in a variety of sectors for tangible, positive impacts
  • Translate science and technology into actionable information for decision making
  • Promote sustainability at a higher level through policy, regulation and global engagement
  • Align sustainability strategies with business models
  • Contribute to environmental justice by helping organizations uphold a culture of sustainability
  • Implement sustainability and green design in urban planning

A smarter approach to sustainability.

Progress on sustainability requires a holistic approach, with contributors from all backgrounds. That’s why we have developed a program to help you bridge the gap between scientific progress and social implementation. Students coming from the humanities, social sciences, business, architecture, planning, policy or law will gain advanced knowledge of the science and technology of sustainability to drive action. Students with engineering, design and science backgrounds will develop the soft skills and management abilities required to lead. All students will learn to work effectively across silos and disciplines to lead bigger initiatives for systemic change.

Our sustainability program offers two master’s degrees and one certificate:

  • MS in Sustainability Management:  30 credits, can be completed in 3 semesters if enrolled full-time or in 5 to 6 semesters if enrolled part-time.
  • MS-MBA in Sustainability Management: 60 credits dual-degree program, can be completed in 2 years including summer semesters or 2.5 years without summer if enrolled full time. You will earn two separate degrees, one MS and one MBA at the end of the program.
  • Certificate in Environmental Management:  12 credits, can be completed in 2 semesters.

Study with an emerging leader in sustainability education.

At Stevens, an AASHE Gold STAR university, sustainability is more than a catchword: it’s a commitment. From winning national awards for student design in energy efficient housing, to incubating high-tech water and solar start-ups, to generating new knowledge for environmental policy and resource management, to developing sustainability management plans for neighboring townships and educational institutions, we live by the belief that what we do every day can positively impact people and the world around us.

This is what some of our former students are saying.

“Sustainability spans every industry and business process, creating endless career trajectories. This program accounts for each student's interests and needs. We speak with sustainability practitioners from diverse industries, backgrounds, and job functions to understand which areas we want to pursue. A bespoke job training program also helps us navigate the niche, yet growing job market.”

Rexford Anderson (Class of 23), Global Sustainability Analyst, Hanesbrands Inc

“I truly loved the atmosphere of every class. Every faculty member does their best to accommodate each student and facilitate the best possible learning experience. They trust that we have the desire to learn and drive to do what we must to succeed. It’s validating to have that level of respect.”

Frances Levy (Class of 22), Senior Sustainability Analyst, Third Partners LLC

“Stevens Capstone program enables you to get hands-on experience building and implementing sustainable initiatives with real impact in communities where we live and work. Stevens’ rich engineering background, culture of innovation, and AASHE STAR Gold rating set the university apart from similar institutions in the tri-state area.”

John Turner (Class of 21), Corporate ESG and Sustainability Manager, J.S. Held LLC

“This program will shape your career. I got hired as an acting plant manager at a major manufacturing facility with zero work experience and some background in engineering. I already had a technical background, but this program taught me management skills, how to think out of the box and how to be more efficient with my work.”
