Saddam, in an effort to push thousands of residents into exile, flooded Iraq’s marshlands, resulting in 10 years of damage to the Gulf ecosystem. In a country like Iraq, environmental protection is more than a luxury: Clean waterways and abundant fish stocks are vital to the infrastructure. This is why international experts are hoping some reconstruction funds might go toward correcting the problems.
