Guest Editors:

Kevin Lynch, a renowned planning figure, and professor at MIT, was born in 1918. The proposed centennial special issue is intended for the autumn issue of 2018, to commemorate the legacy and the distinctive idea of city design that he advanced through his contributions on city imaging, regional environmental design and management, performance characteristics of good city form, preservation and change, design rules and processes, and other such related ideas. These ideas continue to define a broad but changing scope of “urban design” within the professional practice, pedagogy, and scholarly discourse in planning. The papers solicited for this special issue will be devoted to reflections, research, and practical applications made in planning, city design, and related fields, inspired by the legacy of Kevin Lynch. Authors are encouraged to address the relevance of the Lynch legacy to the changing circumstances of globalization, information and digital technology, and the continuing challenges of sustainability and reconciling contradictory imperatives of economy, equity, and environment in planning.
